Summer Camp Training Workshop — 2018

Workshop are now closed. If you are interested in getting some experience in STEM oriented hands-on activities, please sign up for our Summits.

Each year the Northwest Earth and Space Sciences Pipeline (NESSP) offers support and training for educators to conduct NESSP-funded, weeklong summer camps for middle and high school students in underserved communities throughout the Pacific Northwest. Camps focus on topics in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) topics.

This spring NESSP is offering three two-day training sessions for community educators who wish to facilitate a camp in their communities in Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Training session will have the following themes:

  1. Environmental science and remote sensing: May 5 – 6, 2018 in Seattle, WA
  2. Planetary exploration and robotics: May 19 – 20, 2018 in Missoula, MT
  3. Exploration of the solar system and rocketry: May 19 – 20, 2018 in McMinnville, OR

Lodging and meals will be provided for all participants at no cost. Travel assistance is also available. Preference will be given to educators who demonstrate an ability to recruit a high number of under-served students (i.e. students underrepresented in STEM and/or students receiving free or reduced-fee lunches) to participate in their summer camp.

Camp facilitators will be provided with camp curriculum, required materials, and access to a network of subject matter experts. Lead camp facilitators will receive a $1,500 stipend to compensate them for their efforts. Camp para-educators will receive a $1,000 stipend. Camp facilitators will commit to securing the location for the summer camp, recruiting students, facilitating the summer camp, and returning all loaned materials and required reporting.
